A 2027 Chevrolet Equinox and a 2027 Equinox EV need different things from a service department, and the gap between them is wider than most owners expect. The gas car runs an oil-life system that decides its own intervals and rotates tires every 7,500 miles. The electric car has no oil interval at all and carries 8 years or 100,000 miles of coverage on its battery and electric components. Both include the first scheduled maintenance visit at 12 months or 12,000 miles.

Oil Change and Scheduled Service Intervals

The gas Equinox does not run a fixed mileage interval for oil. The vehicle's own oil-life system monitors how the engine is actually being used and sets each interval accordingly, which is why a car doing short winter trips around Whitehall will call for service sooner than one doing steady highway miles to Easton. Chevrolet's standing guidance is to change the oil at least once a year regardless of what the monitor says, and to reset the system each time.

The Equinox EV has no oil interval, no filter and no spark plugs. Its scheduled service is tire rotation, brake and suspension inspection, cabin air filter, and coolant and brake fluid on the manufacturer's schedule. The first visit at 12 months or 12,000 miles is included in the same way it is on the gas car.

Both cars use regenerative or conventional braking in ways that change pad life. On the EV, regenerative braking does much of the slowing, so friction pads often last considerably longer than they do on a comparable gas car. That does not remove them from the inspection list, because pads that are used lightly in a salted climate corrode rather than wear.

Common Service Needs in the Lehigh Valley

Two things drive most of what we see on Equinoxes here, and neither is on the manufacturer's calendar.

Salt season, late November through March. PennDOT runs salt and anti-skid heavily on Route 22, I-78 and PA 33, and the Lehigh Valley's freight traffic keeps those roads wet with brine well after a storm passes. What that does to brake hardware, underbody fasteners and exposed fittings has nothing to do with how many miles are on the odometer. Regular underbody washing through those months is the single highest-value thing an owner here does, and it is why the 6-year, 100,000-mile rust-through coverage is worth more in Allentown than it is in most of the country.

Pothole season, February to April. The Valley's freeze-thaw cycling is severe and wheel, tire and alignment damage spikes in those weeks. An alignment check in April is cheaper than a set of tires in July. This is also the argument for 19-inch wheels over 21-inch on an Equinox EV: more sidewall between the rim and the edge you did not see.

On the EV specifically, cold weather reduces range temporarily, which is normal for any electric vehicle and not a fault. Preconditioning the cabin while the car is still plugged in is the practical answer, and it is a setting rather than a service item.

Reliability and What Holds Up

The 2027 gas Equinox uses the 1.5L Turbo four with the 8-speed automatic across every trim, so there is one powertrain combination in the lineup to know rather than several. Front-wheel-drive models moved to that 8-speed for 2027, which means the whole gas range now shares one transmission.

The Equinox EV's single-speed direct drive has no gearset to service and no fluid changes of the kind a conventional automatic needs. Its wear items are tires, brakes, suspension bushings, wipers and cabin filters, which is a materially shorter list. The battery carries its own 8-year, 100,000-mile coverage on top of the car's 3-year, 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper term.

On both cars the components that actually fail early in this region are corrosion-driven rather than mileage-driven, which is a good reason to keep the underbody clean and to have brake hardware looked at each spring.

Costs to Own

The first scheduled maintenance visit is included on both cars, so year one costs an owner nothing in scheduled service. After that the two diverge.

The gas Equinox's recurring costs are oil and filter changes on the oil-life schedule, tire rotations every 7,500 miles, engine and cabin air filters, and eventually brakes and tires. Its 14.8-gallon tank at 27 MPG combined in front-wheel drive, or 26 with all-wheel drive, sets the fuel side.

The Equinox EV removes oil changes, engine air filters and spark plugs from that list entirely and replaces the fuel line item with electricity, rated by the EPA at 33 kWh per 100 miles in all-wheel drive. Charging at home overnight on a 240-volt circuit is where the running-cost advantage actually lands; a driver who has to rely on public DC fast charging sees a different number.

Tires are the item to budget for on both. Larger wheels look better and cost more to replace, and in a market with our road surfaces they get replaced sooner.
